Old Fashioned

Step one of making an Old Fashioned is to start with a good bourbon. The rule is, if the bourbon can’t be consumed on its own, it shouldn’t be used for an Old Fashioned. Step two is to decide between simple syrup or muddled sugar. Go for a sugar or, better yet, a sugar cube because it’s fun to toss it in a glass, saturate it with bitters, add a splash of water, and muddle. Plus, doing this prep is reminiscent of the way it was enjoyed 200 years ago.

Ingredients

  1. Add the sugar and bitters to a rocks glass, then add the water, and stir until the sugar is nearly dissolved.
  2. Fill the glass with large ice cubes, add the bourbon, and gently stir to combine.
  3. Express the oil of an orange peel over the glass, then drop in.
